Is waterproof a necessary feature for smartphones to have?

A waterproof smartphone

Twenty years ago, we buy phones to make calls, to send text messages and to browse the internet, but phones have greatly evolved in the past few years and have enabled us to do much more. Today's smartphones are not only smarter, but they are also better in terms of what they offer.

In fact, one of the key areas where the evolution of technology can be deeply felt in the last ten years is in the mobile phone industry. In functionality, things have gotten better and is even getting more better as each day pass by.

Smartphones have become the goto for the general populace and the common commodity for both the rich and the poor, irrespective of the household. But are all features as valuable as manufacturers of these smartphones claimed?

Waterproof is one of the features that has been around for a while, but it is also one of the features that is being questioned by most smartphone users because it is not as essential as it seemed.

This raised the question, is waterproof really a necessary feature when it come to smartphones? Can it be considered as one of the essential features? The truth is, a smartphone is still a smartphone without any waterproof features. It is ideal, but not essential.

As a matter of fact, complexity surrounds this waterproof of a thing because waterproof smartphones are not entirely waterproof as they sound. Of course, manufacturers want us to believe that they are.

Claiming waterproof for a phone that can only survive in up to 1.5 meters deep of water for about 30 minutes is but a misuse of word, the most appropriate words should be "water resistant".

It is one thing for a phone to be waterproof, it is another thing for it to be completely submersible irrespective of the deepness (depth) of the water and its acidity or alkalinity. The standard mostly used are IP67 and IP68, but none of the two reflects the true definition of waterproofing.

However, I can rightfully say that there are some advantages attached to using waterproof smartphones. Their build are of much quality and so are their designs.

Furthermore, the exterior and the interior of a waterproof smartphone in most cases are not only protected from water but also from dust - this helps heighten the durability of the device. Another benefit of a smartphone that has waterproof is that it makes the device to be more secured.

While bathing, while walking in the rain, or while splashing water in a nearby stream, waterproof smartphones can be used without facing any consequences, something we can't dare to do with our normal smartphones.

The benefits are there, but it takes caution because of the existence of limitations and criteria that are attributed to the waterproofing scheme of these device. These limitations does not warrant for waterproof to be considered as an important (or a necessary) feature when buying a new smartphone, at least for now.

Things will definitely get better in the future, but for now, when it comes to smartphones, waterproof is an ideal feature but not essential.
